Artists and Friends Minutes

February 17, 2022

The meeting was opened by Ann Garrard, Co-Director at 6:32 in the Arbor Room.  She reminded people to check in and when they do to put their names in the bag to win the beautiful calendar.

First time to attend meeting was Ruth Pfieff.

Diane Cowdry is visiting her Mother Joan Cowdry and will be taking home the beautiful quilt that Joan is showing tonight.

Ann announced that she has four copies of Voices which contain the article by Donna Johnson and pictures of the Van Gogh exhibit.

Three dimensional art is needed for the change out of art in the Magnolia Library on Wednesday, February 23rd.  Ann Garrard is asking for help on this project since Sally Shockley is unable to do it due to her husband’s illness.  If you have something three dimensional that can be used, please let Ann know.

On March 14th, the hallway gallery will be changed.   Please talk to Wanda Mann if you have something to show.

On February 28 the window display in the art studio will be changed welcoming spring.  We are seeking pieces which are bright and springy or something related to Mardi Gras or St. Patrick’s Day.  If you would like to submit something, please bring it to the art studio early Monday morning, or over the weekend, and leave it on the ledge by the display case.  Put your name on everything.

Tom Naylor reported that the Artists of Highland Springs website has 301 pieces of artwork displayed and it has been visited 1764 times.

Nancy Gage followed up that a new website focused on Artists and Friends is being built which will include the calendar of classes and teachers. She did not print the calendar but will email to Lois Thompson.

Jane Jones talked about her fabulous class of fine art collage that just finished. Many pieces were being shown at the meeting. Beginning March 8th, she will be teaching a new Techniques Class which is full,  but she has 1 opening in her Absolute Beginners Class.  She will also be giving critiques on Friday, February 18 beginning at 9:30.  Anyone is welcome to come and just listen.

Jan Dame will begin a card making class the first Thursday of March from 1-3:30. There will be a different technique each week.

Claudia Bird has put books on the back table which are free to take.

Lois Kohn reported that there was a $60 donation to the treasury of which $9.75 was spent for screws and bolts.

Jane Dame talked about Jane Jone’s collage class.  Members of the class showed and discussed their pieces.

Joan Cowdry showed her quilt which she is giving to her daughter. She was encouraged to sign and date the quilt.

Suzanne Moore showed her embroidery and applique which was displayed on a piece of lucite and attached with Velcro.

Jane Jones showed and discussed her abstract watercolors.

Susan Austin showed her pours on glass vases. She is looking for more glass to use in her pours and will come pick them up if you have some extras.

Stan Sobkowiak showed his poured piece. He has been coming for 4 years and this is his first time to show!

Thought for the evening:  Competitions are for horses, not artists.  Thank you Donna.
