Artist and Friends Minutes

March 17, 2022

Ann Garrard opened the meeting.

New attendees were introduced:  Leon Harp, Connie Lacy, and Sylvia Taylor.

Thank you to Susan Austin for set up and Lois Thompson for the sign in sheets.

NOTE:  Our next meeting will not be at the regular time, we have been bumped from this room.

Out next meeting will be on April 28th, the 4th Thursday.

Claudia Bird brought art books for the taking. They are on the back table so check that out before you leave.

Claudia Bird will continue to write articles in Voices about artists.  Talk to her about any ideas you might have that would be of interest to the Highland Springs Community.

New paintings by Tom Naylor, Susan Williams and Jan Dame have been installed in the Hillcrest hallway. The previous art has been moved to Magnolia Place. If you would like a piece of your art hung in the hallways talk to Wanda Mann. Artwork should be framed with 2 D rings on the back to hold the wire.  The wire should be tight enough to keep the top of the frame against the wall. Thank you to Jean Fortune for making the title cards.

Nancy Gaige will request the chairs be removed from the back room.

A non-art meeting was held in the studio and the studio was left dirty. One of our teachers had to clean it before her class. Nancy will request that no recurring meetings be scheduled for the Studio. We would like to have “Open Studio” when there are no classes. “Open Studio” meaning any artists can go in there and work. We also need a broom and dustpan.

Mary Griffith requested a drawing class. Do we have anyone that can do that?

Nancy Gaige is building a website to navigate the world of art at Highland Springs.   The website is HSDCommunity.org. It will have information about teachers, classes and artwork.  If you have information or artwork that you would like included on this website, please contact her.

Jane Jones is signing up students for her next fall and winters classes.

Sue White will be changing the display case in front of the art studio on March 31. Spring means fishing, so if you have something fishy or springy, bring it on March 31st to the studio. If you have something on display now, please come on March 31st to pick it up.

Donna Johnston will be teaching bird houses. The class will take 4 days and you need to attend all four classes to complete your birdhouse. The dates are Monday March 28th, Friday April 1, Monday April 8th, and Friday, April 11, from 1 to 4 in the afternoon.  Birdhouse and supplies will be furnished for the cost of $15. The class is limited to 12 students.

Show and Tell:

Pam Spapperi showed an oil landscape that she taught in class. Her students Mary Griffith, Lois Kohn and Kathleen Cavanna also showed their landscapes which were painted in acrylics.

Gary Ester showed his maple and rosewood vase. On March 24th, the woodshop is having an open house demonstrating how the toys are made. Everyone is invited.

Ann Weyrauch showed a portrait of her grandchild she drew using a grid. Lois Kohn showed how you could get a grid and lay it over a picture on your phone.

Jane Jones showed a watercolor that will be included in the book she is writing. She reminded everyone that she is doing critiques on Friday from 9:30 to 11:30.

Marcia Snyder showed a chicken done on sandpaper based with watercolor then drawn with pastels.

Lois Thompson showed a still life watercolor of vegetables.

SuzanneMoore, who is not friends with watercolors, showed her attempts at watercolor.

Connie Lacy showed drawings by Karl Hoefle, which were done for yellow pages years ago. He started adding kittens to the drawings and it became a “thing.”  Everyone looked for the cats in his drawings. She also showed drawings made by John A Langlinais for Freeport Chemical Company to give their stockholders at Christmas.

Nancy Gaige said there is scrapbook material for anyone to use in a box in the small closet.
