  DAVID G. FLEMING MD, PHD
HIGHLAND SPRINGS RESIDENT, NAVY BY ELYSE FLEMING, WIDOW
David G. Fleming, MD, PhD was born on July 3, 1926 in New York City. While attending the Bronx High School of Science, he volunteered to join the US Navy in 1944. Shipped to Biloxi, Mississippi, he was then trained as a radio technician who would serve in the Pacific Theater on the USS Klondike, a destroyer tender. He was discharged in June 1946 in San Diego, and then moved to Berkeley California where he attended the University.
The GI Bill afforded him the opportunity to earn his B.S. in zoology, and then his PhD in physiology. He married Elyse Schwartz in 1949. The Flemings then relocated for five years to the University of Kansas in Lawrence. David then accepted employment at General Electric in Cleveland, Ohio in 1958.
He then accepted an appointment at Case Western Reserve University in 1959, where he co-founded the Department of Biomedical Engineering. Always up for a new challenge, David entered medical school at the age of 42. Upon graduation he began medical practice in pediatrics at Case Western Reserve Medical School and Cleveland Metro Hospital, where he directed the Sudden Infant Death Center. A major accomplishment of his was to co-invent the CPAP, with two of his engineering colleagues.
After his long career, David retired for 20 years to the Palm Springs, California area with his wife, Elyse. In the fall of 2012, David and Elyse relocated from California and moved into Highland Springs. Unfortunately, David only lived for less than a year and passed away in June 2013. He is buried in the National Cemetery here in Grand Prairie, having received a US Naval Burial.
