THOMAS HOLLCROFT HIGHLAND SPRINGS RESIDENT, NAVY
Concerning my military service, completed Naval flight training in June 1958,
Received orders to return to Pensacola, FL as a primary flight instructor at Saufley Field in the Pensacola area.
Remained there until October 1960, then reported to Naval Air Station Oceana, VA until discharge in February 1961.
While attached to the training command at Pensacola, was selected as one of approximately twelve instructors assigned to a special squadron to evaluate training flight students in an all jet (turbine powered) environment. Both the Navy and Air Force experimented with this program at approximately the same time. This program did not last very long.
Was then assigned to Naval Air Station Oceana.
Received my discharge papers Feb 1961 and returned to civilian life. My rank upon discharge was Lieutenant.
As a member of the Naval Reserve, I was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. I elected not to accept this rank and dropped out of the Reserve Unit.
