Woodchucks
are a volunteer group who share a common interest in creating useful and beautiful objects in wood. Our Members range in ability level from those who are just beginning to those who have mastered wood working after decades of experience. The equipment and tools in the wood shop are available for use by all members of the Woodchucks for group or individual projects. Classes are occasionally available for those who have an interest in learning to use certain tools or mastering building skills.
The men and women of the Woodchucks have a special interest in a number of philanthropic projects. Throughout the year various members work to create a variety of wooden toys. Last year, over 1,600 unpainted small toys were built for donations to local children’s hospitals. These toys included airplanes, helicopters, roadsters, sedans and race cars. Woodchucks are looking for ideas for toys to build for little girls.
Members also work to build toys for the Annual Christmas Toy Drive which are offered for purchase. After purchase, these toys can be used as personal gifts or turned back to Woodchucks as a donation. Woodchucks then take donated toys to Fort Hood for distribution to deserving children of active military personnel. The others are taken for distribution to children in the care of the Collin County Advocacy Center. In 2021, 377 toys were made that included puzzle trucks, car carriers, fire trucks and doll cradles that held a sweet doll with bedding and blanket. The Needle & Thread Sewers group work together to assemble the dolls, their clothing and their bedding.
New members are welcomed to enjoy our wonderful woodworking facility and join us in our community service projects. In addition to helping with the actual manufacture of toy parts, volunteers are needed to help with assembly, sanding, painting and decal application.
