JAMES A. HILL
HIGHLAND SPRINGS RESIDENT, NAVY BY NORMA HILL, WIDOW
James A. Hill was born on May 17, 1930 in Gary, Indiana. He entered the U. S. Navy on November 16, 1953.
He was trained as a Machinery Repairman at San Diego, CA and later served on the USS Everglades (AD-24),
James was awarded the Navy Occupation Service Medal (European Clasp) and the National Defense Service Medal.
He was discharged at the US Naval Training Center, Bainbridge, MD on February 11, 1955.
one of four Klondike class destroyer tenders built at
the tail end of World War II for the United States Navy. The vessel was named for
the Florida Everglades. Commissioned May 25, 1951, arrived at Norfolk, Virginia,
for duty with Destroyer Force Atlantic. She played a vital part in keeping the Navy
ready, repairing Norfolk-based destroyers and servicing ships in the Caribbean or
the Mediterranean
