The original Flag recognized by Congress in 1777 was red, white, and blue with 13 stars and 13 stripes; in keeping with the 13 colonies at that time. It has been revised at least 27 times during its history. The American Flag has come to be recognized throughout the world as representing freedom, valor, compassion, vigilance, perseverance, and justice. Our Flag serves as a symbol of unity during times of conflict such as WW I and WW II and periods of National Tragedy such as 9/11.
Highland Springs began displaying the Flags on National Holidays as a patriotic service to the Residents. Resident Veteran Wally Reed initiated the display of Flags in 2011 with the support of the Executive Director. The Veterans Affairs Group took over the Flag Display for Highland Springs in early 2019. The original boundary of the Flag Display was from Hillcrest Clubhouse to the entrance of the Gate House and behind Hillcrest Clubhouse in the courtyard. With the growth of our Community, the Flag Display includes the public spaces, roadways, parking areas and the entrances to all three neighborhoods.
A Flag committee was formed inside the Veterans Affairs Group to maintain, store, clean, and procure new Flags when needed.
The National Holidays when the Flags are displayed are:
Armed Forces Day Celebration (Third Saturday in May)
Memorial Day Celebration (Last Monday in May)
Flag Day Celebration (June 14)
Independence Day Celebration (July 4)
Patriots Day Celebration (September 11)
Veterans Day Celebration (November 11)
Highland Springs has purchased 1000 American flags and the Veterans Affairs Group is the flag custodian.
Veterans place approximately 400 flags and Resident volunteers of several buildings
place around 200 flags in their neighborhood !
