The idea of using inscribed, commemorative bricks as a prominent feature of the Veterans Memorial Park was introduced by Al and Pat Binko at the initial meeting of the Veterans Affairs Group in July 2016. Subsequently, a meeting of interested residents was held, and decisions were made about the size, color, design, and cost of the bricks.
The first brick drive was held in the fall of 2016 when 75 bricks were sold. They were prepared and installed by Brick and Stone, a Dallas source, and installed in January 2017. Brick drives have been held every November since then, and it is intended that this schedule will be maintained in the future. The revenue produced by these sales makes an important contribution to the budget of the Veterans Affairs Group.
Initially, bricks were only made available to resident Veterans. The eligibility has been expanded to include immediate family members who are Veterans, and employees with at least five years of service to Highland Springs. Each brick purchaser may customize the order as desired, e.g., name, rank, branch and dates of service, unit, location, and highest award. Specific eligibility criteria and included in this binder. The bricks installed during the previous Brick Sales are beginning to show some fading of the legend’s painted on the top of the brick – this will be addressed by the Veterans Affairs Group and Highland Springs General Services.
As of June 10, 2026: there are 665 inscribed bricks, three tribute pavers, and four index bricks ( 10-A as shown above ) which are intended to guide people to the columns of bricks and the rows that start with ‘A’, ( on the left side/southern side) and go up the column in aphabetical sequence to ‘N’, to locate bricks that have been installed.
